PlanB
1) Identify the target audience (demographics/psychographics) for this magazine. How is that particular audience attracted? targets mainly men aged 17-30,this target audience would be classed as C1,C2 or D on the standard occupational classification, meaning people between lower middle class, skilled working class and working class are all targets of this specific magazine. Many close up photos are used in this magazine. This is evident on both the front cover and inside the magazine. With the use of colours and text fonts, the overall layout of the magazine is slightly informal and very much appeals to men in their 20’s. A slightly glossy front cover is used and this also helps capture the readers eye.  The layout of the magazine was well thought out and includes everything that the target audience would want from a magazine of this genre.
2) Does the article do more than just entertain? How? (Think of Uses and Gratifications theory) What audience pleasures does the article offer? it gives a lot of information about the film like the release date, cast and plot. as well as a release date for the ill manors album. it gives a lot of his views around the riots
3) What codes/conventions of print interviews can you find in the article?
4) How is narrative used to tell a story in each interview? Clue: what is it that keeps the reader interested in the article to the very end?

5) What synergy can you find between this text and the broadcast examples we have studied so far? in the just the front cover there is synergy between the ill manors album cover and this magazine cover. they both have similar iconography like the clothing, the hoodie and the cigarette in both media texts. the way plan b speaks about the film and politics and the riots in this interview is similar to the way he speaks about those things in the Jonathan Ross show.

Plan B men's health interview

1) Identify the target audience (demographics/psychographics) for this magazine. How is that particular audience attracted? men's health digital audience consists of mostly men aged 25-34 and mainly within the ABC1 class.

2) Does the article do more than just entertain? How? (Think of Uses and Gratifications theory) What audience pleasures does the article offer? It allows people to relate to plan b's situation and feelings towards being overweight and fitness and health.

3) What codes/conventions of print interviews can you find in the article?

4) How is narrative used to tell a story in each interview? Clue: what is it that keeps the reader interested in the article to the very end? this interview is cut up into sections about different topics that Drew spoke about and each section is quite short so it doesn't feel like a long read to a reader.

5) What synergy can you find between this text and the broadcast examples we have studied so far? there is some synergy as there is a section where he briefly talks about his film and the London riots. he states his main ideology like why did it happen and how can it be prevented in the future, similar to his statements in the TEDx lecture.

Plan b guardian interview

1) Identify the target audience (demographics/psychographics) for this magazine. How is that particular audience attracted?
it's a left wing paper so usually the headlines will emphasis left wing ideologies and attract their audience with similar ideologies.

2) Does the article do more than just entertain? How? (Think of Uses and Gratifications theory) What audience pleasures does the article offer?
it gives personal story that plan b shared with the interviewer and that allows a audience an insight on plan b's childhood. it gives some information about the narrative of the film and some ideology's behind the film.

3) What codes/conventions of print interviews can you find in the article?
it has a main headline and image relating to the article.

4) How is narrative used to tell a story in each interview? Clue: what is it that keeps the reader interested in the article to the very end?
it hooks readers in with a negative review of the film and people who enjoyed the film will read on of dislike for the writer but will want to know the opinion, people who also disliked the film will relate and read on  to see if they share the same dislike of the film and people who haven't seen the film will read on to find out whether or not its worth watching for them. it then also outlines the plot of the film and then states some positive things about the film.

5) What synergy can you find between this text and the broadcast examples we have studied so far?

Making of DVD

SBTV interview

1) What is SBTV? Research the channel and explain how it became successful.
Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.
SBTV is a multi- faceted company founded by Jamal Edwards and run by a small team of young people who work on web-based content. usually with a new music angle. The media platform has its roots in urban music, most of the official SBTV website includes unprofessional footage or "street-shot" raps and music videos.

2) What is the audience appeal for an interview like this? How does the opening of the clip emphasise this appeal?
it gives an exclusive insight on the work happening to get the film finished, it even shows some footage from the film. the beginning of the video emphasises this as the interviewer states that they aren't supposed to be there and acts secretive hence the secret insight of the film.

3) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?
Plan B is shown as a hard working editor and director. He is also shown to be a bit nervous as he briefty states that that he's worried about people not liking it. also there is a perfectionist side shown as he is trying to get the film how he wants before someone comes and takes over. There is also a personal and informal presentation of him in the video when he begins to joke around with the interviewer.

Plan B on BBC Radio 1 show

1) How popular is BBC Radio 1? Find average listening figures for the station. How has the BBC Radio 1 audience declined over recent years? Why might this have happened?
2) Who is the target audience for BBC Radio 1?
3) How does Plan B promote Ill Manors in this interview?
4) What representation of Plan B can we find in this interview?

SOHK.TV interview

1) What is SOHK.TV?
SOHK stands for school of hard knocks and they use sport to tackle issues surrounding unemployment, health and crime.

2) Why is Ill Manors a good fit to promote on SOHK.TV?
because both the film and the SOHK share similar views about helping young children in rough situations and therefore people who watch the interview will agree with the views of the film and go and watch it.

3) What kind of audience would subscribe to SOHK.TV? Is it a different audience to the main target audience for Ill Manors? Why might this benefit Ben Drew and the institutions behind Ill Manors?
I think they both share a similar audience because of their aims. This is beneficial as it'll bring more viewers of the film and help reach a wider audience of a similar demographic.

Jonathan Ross interview

1) What is the history of the Jonathan Ross show? What channels has it appeared on? Why has Jonathan Ross been a controversial media figure in the past?
The Jonathan Ross show is a British chat show where host Jonathan Ross would bring in public figures who have been in the news recently and appears on ITV. Jonathan Ross is considered a controversial figure because he was suspended from all BBC shows for 3 months back in 2008, where he was a guest on Russel Brands BBC radio 2 show, because of his and Brands actions in messages left on actor Andrew Sachs phone. however Jonathan apologised for his mistake and returned to radio 2 a year after, before leaving in 2010.
2) Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.

3) What is the audience appeal for a programme like the Jonathan Ross show?

4) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?

Ill Manors e-media: website analysis

 1) What examples can you find of the Ill Manors brand on the Ill Manors website homepage screengrab above?
there's the use of the council housing environment that is similar to some in the film. there also seems to be all the main characters in the image. the logo 'Ill manors' with the particular brand font is seen twice one in the top left corner and in the poster in the foreground behind the main character, this reinforces the brand to an audience.

2) How does the website encourage the audience to buy or interact with Ill Manors products?
At the top of the screengrab there is information about where to buy the film, encouraging people to buy it as there is a range of ways to access the film. then below that is the #illmanors, allowing viewers to interact on social media and spread the word about the film and below that is a 'Ill manors buy now' writing which would probably link the audience to another website in order to buy it.

3) Now look at Plan B's official website. How does it use social media in terms of content and design? Why might the website designers have wanted to create the look and feel of a social networking site?
the website is linked to plan bs social media accounts so that what ever he posts on them it is also posted on the website. this may be because websites have been becoming obsolete through the years so this website wants to have the look and design of social media and be linked to all plan bs social media so they can all be accessed in one place.

4) Scroll back through the wall to look at posts from around the release date of Ill Manors. How does this statement on Ill Manors link to other texts we have studied as part of this case study? Do you agree with his claim that he "won't justify" the riots? What does this statement suggest about the representation of young people in Plan B's film and music videos? what plan b says in this statement is similar to the TEDx talk where he talks about the word 'chav' being openly used in news papers and how young children are being demonised because of their background or the way they dress.

5) Why do you think social media is overtaking official websites in terms of film promotion?
the use of websites is being obsolete because now social media has become more often used worldwide. social media now allows audiences a physical involvement with the film and film promotion. its a lot faster and easier for promotion to be spread and seen by so many people with social media.

Ill Manors trailer analysis

Ill Manors trailer analysis

What are the typical codes and conventions of film trailers - what information is usually provided?
Trailers usually start with the institutional information and director and star credits. then it will establish narrative and genre using iconography, dialogue or voice overs (however voice overs are considered an outdated convention) along with a introduction of key characters. there's usually montages of the key events of the film throughout the trailer. music from the soundtrack will usually be over these montages it'll either be music that fits the editing of the montage and the sequences in the montage or one that fits the overall narrative. titles are used more often now instead of voice overs to tell the audience something about the film, they usually contain the tagline.
How are trailers usually distributed?
usually trailers are distributed by the studios that produce them, i.e Warner bros distributes harry potter films but also its trailers. The trailers are released on a reel (DVD or tape) to be viewed by costumers going to rental stores.

Watch the trailer carefully and discuss how it might attract an audience.

  3. Find examples of synergy or cross-promotion between the planbuk YouTube channel and other media texts you have studied as part of the case study. Explain how they both promote the film and appeal to the Ill Manors target audience. the profile picture and header of the channel are all relation to the Ill manors album cover with the image of plan b sitting on the wall smoking and the branding of the font used for the title of Ill manors. they promote and appeal to the Ill manors target audience as they allow audiences to relate to the branding of a "chav."

Ill Manors: film review

Ill Manors: film review

Ill manors was released in 2012 and directed by Ben dew mostly non as rapper Plan b.
on IMdb it gained a 7.1 star rating out of 10. a unique crime thriller set on the streets of London. Ill manors takes you on a journey following six lives. there is the ex-dealer Kirby, who has just been released from prison, thug Ed who will stop at nothing to find his phone, Michelle who is just looking for her next hit, young Jake who finds himself in a local gang, Chris, who seeks revenge, Katya, who is trying to escape this foreign land and Aaron, the main protagonist who is just trying to do the right thing. the characters were very genuine and believable however the story took so many twists and turns to emphasis the struggle that it brought you out of the realness of the film. it film was very unique in how it used the music to introduce a character and their back story and it shows a lot of work put into the film and these characters. The plot may seem a bit exaggerated at times but you won't be able to look away for a second.

Ill Manors: TEDx lecture

Ill Manors: TEDx lecture

What are Plan B's beliefs/politics? What are his values/ideologies
he believes a lot in children coming from 'rough' backgrounds needing a positive role model because they wouldn't have been exposed to that. he strongly has a passion for helping young 'chavs' in similar situations to himself. he understands where young chavs come from and acknowledges that "ignorant people settle things by using violence because they aren't educated enough to do it another way" he also has strong views about the London riots and argues that they happened due to children not feeling part of society. he wanted to change the things he saw in real life and in newspapers that he didn't agree with, he wants to be an almost father figure to children.

Who is the target audience of the TEDx lecture? Demographics? Psychographics? How do you know? How does this compare to the audience for his music/films? Is there more than one audience for this talk?
TEDx lectures are usually targeted to middle class well educated people who are interested in the topic being talked about. plan bs usual target audience is mostly opposite as they are usually lower class, with no higher education or hardly any. i think there could be more than one audience for this talk and that is the people who watch it online and that will click on it because it is plan b.

What does Plan B say about the media? Explain how this can be linked to Cohen's media theory of moral panicsRead this summary of moral panics and the definition from Wikipedia and use them in your answer

plan b talks about the word 'chav'' in media and explains how it used to mean something completely innocent however media coverage and newspapers began to use the word to demonise a lower class. this label of a deviant group allows lower class 'chavs' to fit into this 'folk devil' that Stanley Cohen created when he was researching the mods and rockers.

Ill Manors music video analysis

I
ll Manors music video:

Media Forms
How is it typical of a music video?:
it fits the purpose of a music video as it was created to promote the ill manors album as well as the film. it also has meaning in the images throughout the video which link in with the meanings and themes of the film.
it is a typical 3-4 minute length
the music video uses all four typical music video conventions which are performance, narrative, thematic and symbolic.
the performance element is plan b actually singing/lip syncing the song with the use of the idea of spectacle when plan b is performing and looking at the camera to address the viewer personally.
the narrative is mostly in the lyrics of this song as plan b takes the viewers on a "safari" and then images in the video match his face paced narrative telling. there is a lot of use of inter- textuality in the video where it shows TV coverage of the London riots from 2011 which this song is a response to.
thematic elements show the common themes within the video. music of the rap genre it has a lot of iconography of "street" clothes and imagery which fit with the themes of the actually song and the films themes.

Media Representations
How does it represent the London riots/rioters?:
it suggests that the riots were the fault of the government who closed down local youth centres around that time. also mentions the 'system' and how that needs fixing not the shops that were destroyed, again hinting at the government being the reason behind the riots. the rioters are portrayed as "chavs" and typical lower class.

Media Audiences
What audience pleasures does the music video offer?
there's a lot of authority figures being shown and then lower class disrespecting them and a lot of political bashing  which would be a audiences pleasure to audiences who relate to the message of the video. there's a fast pace editing throughout and then a lead up to action/violence when the chorus arrives. after the first chorus plan b's rapping begins to sped up allow audiences to feel his passion and also feel a bit tense. there are also some cameos from the actors from the film so audiences who have seen the film or trailer before this will gain pleasure in noticing them. throughout the video it changes from illustrations to real images and they both contrast in feel as the illustrations are used in a more comedic manor and the real images are used to showcase the reality of the situation the change of tone throughout can be an audience pleasure as it brings up different emotions in a audience.

Media Institutions
How does the music video help to promote the film of the same name?:
it fits the same themes of the film so it allows audiences to have a taste of what type of actors, settings and themes will be explored in the film. it also uses actors from the film. it gets audience excited about the topics of the music video and therefore excited about themes of the film.

Own genre analysis

carry out your own genre analysis using the model provided by media theorist Daniel Chandler. Choose a film or TV text and answer the following questions:

General
1) Why did you choose the text you are analysing?
- The Good Neighbour
2) In what context did you encounter it?
I watched it at home with my sister, around the time it gets dark so as me and my sister watched -it gradually got extremely dark in the room with only fairy lights on.
3) What influence do you think this context might have had on your interpretation of the text?
4) To what genre did you initially assign the text?
-Psychological Thriller
5) What is your experience of this genre?
-It's one of my favourite genres so I enjoy most films within the genre.
6) What subject matter and basic themes is the text concerned with?
- two teens decide to put cameras into their neighbours house, who is an old elder male and is seeming a hermit character and they plan to watch him and almost tease him to see how he would react.
7) How typical of the genre is this text in terms of content?
it contains a lot of slow tense moments with one big build up to a shocking ending. it intrigues audiences with mystery.
8) What expectations do you have about texts in this genre?
i expected a lot of tension and interesting themes that are usually asked but are either too unethical to find out or unable to be looked at.
9) Have you found any formal generic labels for this particular text (where)?
10) What generic labels have others given the same text?
11) Which conventions of the genre do you recognise in the text?
12) To what extent does this text stretch the conventions of its genre?
13) Where and why does the text depart from the conventions of the genre?
there isn't much action that is usually seen in thrillers and even though there is usually less action in psychological thrillers there is still much less in this film.
14) Which conventions seem more like those of a different genre (and which genre(s))?
15) What familiar motifs or images are used?

Mode of address
1) What sort of audience did you feel that the text was aimed at (and how typical was this of the genre)? i think it was aimed at middle class people because of the location of the film which seems to be a typical middle class neighbour hood however it could appeal to working class as well. although the main cast is mostly men and that would make it seem to appeal to mostly a male audiences there is a lot of sentimental themes within the film which appeal to female audiences.
2) How does the text address you?
3) What sort of person does it assume you are? because of the themes i think it assumes its audiences to be empathetic towards characters and situations.
4) What assumptions seem to be made about your class, age, gender and ethnicity?
5) What interests does it assume you have?

Relationship to other texts
1) What intertextual references are there in the text you are analysing (and to what other texts)?
2) Generically, which other texts does the text you are analysing resemble most closely?
3) What key features are shared by these texts?
4) What major differences do you notice between them?

Media Factsheet 03

Read Media Factsheet 03 - Genre: Categorising texts and answer the following questions:

1) What example is provided of why visual iconographies are so important?
the image of someone siting behind a desk which doesn't indicate genre however in high key lighting , a modern mise en scene and screen behind the character at the desk these iconographies then create an image we associate with a news broadcast.

2) What examples are provided of the importance of narrative in identifying genre?
they used the example soap operas and sit-coms. for example in a soap opera it would not be unusual to see one of the story lines follow a family having to deal with a domestic situation such as a member of the family having trouble with their boss at work. this type of story may appear in a sitcom however the way the story develops and resolves will be differently than a soap opera, for example it could be brought up and be dealt with in just one episode however in a soap opera it could be stretched out into a few. in a soap opera the situation will be shown much more seriously, causing the boss to be the 'villain' however in a sit com it will be portrayed much less serious and would be dealt with humour.

3) What is the difference between character representation in action movies and disaster movies?
A action hero is usually considered a 'lone wolf' as they usually work alone in being the hero, also even within a group they usually don't fit in or would do things their own way straying from the group. however with disaster movies the hero/s are in one group whether it be a group of friends or a family and each member each have strengths that help in resolving the problem/s.

4) What are the different ways films can be categorised according to Bordwell?
-Period or Country
-Director/Star
-Technical process
-Style
-Series
-Audience

5) List three ways genre is used by audiences.
-audiences use genre to compare a text through its shared characteristics with another. audiences define its genre and then clarify what other text it is similar to.
-audiences use prior knowledge of the genre to figure out whether or not they'll enjoy a text. this helps when choosing a media text to consume.
-they will also use their knowledge of genre in order to reject a text. so they'd avoid certain texts that hold certain genre characteristics.

6) List three ways genre is used by institutions or producers.
-producers are able to use genre as a template that they can follow. when creating certain genres there are usually 'rules' that need to be followed to fit the certain genre.
- they can use genre to attract audiences. some genres have loyal fan-bases therefore audiences will watch things purely because it is part of that genre. this helps producers minimise failure.
-genre is used in marketing texts. like trailers where they attempt to define the genre of the film by using as much codes and conventions in the trailers. this is used to attract fans of the genre and set up expectations for the film.

7) What film genre is used as an example of how genres evolve? What films and conventions are mentioned?
the gangster film genre is used as an example. one code mention is the tommy gun hidden in a violin case. the first time it is seen it comes to a surprise to the audience, after that it would be pleasurable but then eventually using the violin case would become a cliche which is why needed for genres to evolve and change.
