Institution: Is the golden age of TV coming to an end?

Institution: Is the golden age of TV coming to an end

On the Guardian website this weekend there was an article suggesting the golden age of TV may be coming to an end - a perfect link to our work on institution and also a good lead in to the key concepts of narrative and genre.

You can find the article here - read the whole thing and also have a look at the comments below. What is YOUR opinion? Is TV in trouble? Are you willing to pay for high quality TV?

I do think TV has been mostly replaced with on demand TV and its become a lot easier to watch things on demand rather than live. I am willing to pay for quality TV but mostly for TV shows that aren't available to me like American TV.

First blog task

1) Why did you choose AS Media Studies?
i choose AS media because i really enjoyed doing it at GCSE and wanted to further my knowledge of the subject

2) Did you take GCSE Media Studies (either here at Greenford or a different school)?
yes

3) If you answered yes to Q2, what grade did you achieve in GCSE Media? What coursework tasks did you complete? What would you say your strengths and weaknesses were in GCSE Media?
i got a B in GCSEs media which surprised me as i had struggled with deadlines and attendance but I was extremely motivated to achieve high as I really enjoyed the course and see it as a possible future career path. Representation:clip analysis

1) List the different people/groups represented in the trailer
men
women
foreign men
2) For each group, decide whether the representation is a dominant or alternative portrayal.
the portrayal of men in the trailer seems to be dominant as the hero and main character is a man. throughout the trailer the hero is seen being aggressive as well as other men which is a usual aspect of men shown in action films. the men in the trailer also seem to be the main people involved in the action of the film. the main female, the heroes daughter isn't in many scenes but in the ones that she is in she is in some sort of trouble and could be considered the damsel in distress which is a dominant representation of woman in films especially in the action genre. foreign men in this film and trailer are the main antagonist which again is a dominant portrayal of foreigners who are always considered the villains in films again especially action films like the bond films. even at the mention of a foreign country the music in the trailer becomes much more dramatic and the pace of the editing is quickened to portray some sort of danger for the characters in Paris.
3) What stereotypes can you identify in the trailer?
the main stereotype shown in the trailer is the dominant man and less dominant female that can't fend for herself. which is a universal stereotype, that females are weaker than men, which is used everywhere and in most media texts. there is also the stereotypes of foreign countries and people which are usually considered dangerous as they are new places and unfamiliar to some therefore become places with unknown outcomes that could be unpleasant.
